A book about being homeless in London

When I came to London in 1996 the first people I met was the homeless. Some became friends, some died and these portrayals of rough sleepers, people in hostels and vulnerable housing is both a personal document of the street phenomena and a testament to my own unsettlement in the late 90s. In liaison with author and journalist, Mark Piggott who himself has experience homelessness, we have attempted to make a contemporary book that shows the invisible barrier in our society - reflecting on ourselves - and the time we are living in. read more

A Walk across Europe to Kosovo

Interventions was conceived under the influence of war in Europe and my anger and frustration with the conflict in the Balkan. In the guise of a landscape painter I began walking through Europe putting myself in the picture as a frontman; my own subjective broadcaster, interpreter and adventurer. My walk during 78 days across Europe is an inquiry into distance - the journey itself. Kosovo is not the subject of my work but a mere stop and my project is a chance to think in a another way about that area and its topography in relation to the European landscape. read more

Mad cows and English men
A portrait of country life and BSE in Britain

In January 1997 I started to photograph farm communities in the Southwest of England. Since then I have followed 3 farm families closely in Dorset and Somerset and the community life surrounding them. All families have suffered from having had BSE in their herds and the economical - let alone the emotional stress - having to eradicate seemingly healthy animals under the selective cull scheme. These photographs are about traditions, rural lifestyles, and show people for whom
the concept of family and community still have value. read more

Streets
Pictures from London

After being away down-under for 3 years I returned to Europe and was curious about the concept of the metropolis as a place of human ecology, diversity and where the theatre of life is played out in the streets indifferent of social, cultural and economical status. At the time in 1996 London was celebrating international acclaim as 'Capitol of Cool' and my interest in street-photography was informed by its most renowned exponents like American photographers, Ewans, Winogrand, Klein and Robert Frank.

Maori
A portrait of the indigenous people of New Zealand

For six months I set forth to investigate rural Maori and lived in a area known as the King Country where the boundaries of three major tribes joined. Being my second visit I learned their language and affiliated with a tribe along the Whanganui River who was in the process of decolonising their people and return to ancestral philosophy. Later I became part of the tribe, were given a native name and I began to photograph Maori in their contemporary environment. I wanted to show their connection to the land and portray how they lived and worked without any romantic conviction of indigenous people living in 'exotic' places. read more

Old in a Home
A portrait of residents in a rest home

Pictures taking during a work placement in 1995 at an old people's home in my hometown of Skoedstrup, Denmark. The pictures reflect our shared experiences and life inside an institution.
"What is it Sigurd is thinking as he sits in his armchair smoking his daily cigar...yesterday or life 50 years ago? Maybe he's just enjoying the moment and the newly fallen snow outside. Memories and losses are ardous and needs daily consultation. Family pictures are all over the walls reminiscent of a life once lived - good and bad." (excerpts from my text in Danish)
